Now you need to switch to the new Google Analytics 4
In a year's time, "regular" Google Analytics will no longer work.
From July 1, 2023, Google Analytics will be discontinued as we know it today. Instead, Google will launch a new tool called Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
How does this affect me?
If you have Google Analytics installed on your website, new statistics will no longer be collected after July 1, 2023. From this date, you will probably not have access to previous history either. If you have set up special tracking or measurements (e.g. measurement of inquiries or purchases), these will not work either.
Squarespace Analytics is still working
If you have a website in Squarespace, you will continue to receive figures and statistics in the analytics tool integrated into the website, called Squarespace Analytics. You do not need to make any changes here.
Google Analytics and GDPR
Both Google Analytics as we know it today and the new Google Analytics 4 software send data out of the EEA, which is in violation of the GDPR. This means that the "new" Analytics 4 is not necessarily more legal to use than the version you have now.
This is something Google says they are working on, and many hope that the legal tangle will be resolved at a higher level through an agreement between the US and the EU. As of now, no one knows for sure what the solution will be.
What should I do?
As things stand now, we recommend that all our customers upgrade to Google Analytics 4 as quickly as possible. Then you can start collecting data in the new tool and avoid being completely without historical analysis figures in a year's time.
